Welcome to the Beginning – My Praying Mantis!

Welcome to the beginning of my journey…. I’d like to introduce you to Mama Mantis – the beautiful praying mantis that helped make it all “click.”

Back in April this year, I got a hummingbird set up going so when the hummingbirds made their way to Kentucky, maybe a few would grace my yard. It’s a simple set up, but it proved effective later in the summer.

This small little set up with some cute flowers started my mini-obsession with growing things this year. Next I got a knockout rose bush, a couple tomato plants, a squash plant and some fresh herbs. I got a few more flowers and plants, and by June, I had everything planted or potted (yeah, I know…a little late in the growing season….that became lesson 1). Now my garden had 2 tomato plants, squash, cucumber, 6 banana pepper plants, jalapeño, green pepper, and red pepper. Started small to see how things would grow before trying a full blown garden…..and things started growing wonderfully! I couldn’t believe it. I never could keep a plant alive before….but this year was different.

As mentioned on my front page, I started growing sunflowers from seeds….I’ve always wanted sunflowers and one day, I said “I’m gonna have sunflowers this year,” got me some seeds and planted them in some super fancy Starbucks hot cups 😉

Before those sunflowers got to be a good enough size to transplant to their final space, I spend weeks watching my other flowers grow. One day, in my day lilies, this beautiful creature showed up….the creature would come to be known as Mama Mantis, but on that day, she was just a random praying mantis that happened to shock the daylights out of me sitting in my lilies!

So begins the story of Mama Mantis….there is oh so much more to tell you….and so much she’s taught me……who knew you could learn about life from a praying mantis?
